This episode does a good job of showing Annie’s graduation as a big event in her life, and also moves along several plots that have been going on. Annie’s coming of age seems real and the ending to her relationship with Ty is a good thing.
But Erik’s sudden anxiety about his family traditions feels a bit forced. The storyline is rather sudden after several seasons of little reference to these problems and there is no emotional basis for it all to be entirely convincing.
The current Ronnie-Dana feud feels repetitive too. Most of the pressure is coming from Ronnie’s own insecurities than the lack of support from his family. The result is a conflict that at times feels more frustrating than dramatic.
The episode has its problems, but there are plenty of touching moments, including Annie’s graduation party. “Keeping the story focused on family, friendship and new beginnings keeps it engaging and gives it a strong emotional core heading into the next chapter of the season.
