Sweet Magnolias Season 5 Episode 7 continues to explore the struggles of the residents of Serenity as relationships are tested, secrets are revealed and preparations for Helen’s wedding progress.
We open with the Magnolias checking out the Bellwether place. Skeeter helps out with a raccoon problem, and Clark unexpectedly offers to pay the bill. His generosity surprises everyone, especially Dana, who gets a thoughtful gift from him—a bottle of tequila for the group’s upcoming margarita night. The gesture leaves the women wondering if they judged Clark too quickly.
Meanwhile tension is rising elsewhere in town. Jeremy is annoyed to find out that Courtney and Ronnie have purchased off-brand bicycles from a new supplier without discussing it with him first. Ronnie grows concerned that those bikes may have been involved in the fire that destroyed the business.
While the community debates whether to bring a baseball franchise to Serenity, Maddie and Cal work tirelessly to win support. Cal calls up some of the local drama club members hoping that maybe they can help generate some interest in the project with their creative ideas.
At Sullivan’s, Helen and Erik share the good news with Jessica that they’ve worked through their recent disagreements. While their relationship appears to be stronger, wedding planning still has its hurdles. In the meantime Dana is swamped with insurance claims and paperwork in the wake of the fire. Luckily friends and family rally around her and offer support when they can.
Ronnie, however, is grappling with guilt. In a discussion with his sponsor in Alcoholics Anonymous, he finally confesses that he has been withholding important information from Dana. He figures it’s time to be honest, to end the load he’s been bearing.
Olivia meanwhile returns to Serenity and meets some familiar faces. She helps the drama club arrange live music, and promises Kyle they’ll get to spend more time together soon. During therapy, Kyle grows to understand his fears more. He realises that his fear of being abandoned has shaped the way he relates to Lily and the way he sees those around him.
Beatriz also gets some exciting news, when a publisher shows an interest in her work. She’s ready to celebrate and tells Maddie the news, who suggests that one day she could partner with her when she opens her bookstore.
Helen and Erik are preparing for their wedding and they ask Isaac to take care of the catering for their wedding. Isaac agrees without hesitation, ensuring the celebration remains a community affair.
Serenity’s younger residents are still working through their own messy relationships. Annie accepts a date with Noah and Olivia talks openly about Ty’s decision to stay away from her. Annie is disappointed but begins to accept that Ty needs time to find his own way before coming home.
A trip to an escape room for Erik’s bachelor party helps solidify friendships. Most of the men are having a good time but Ronnie is not paying attention. Cal notices the tension between Ronnie and Jeremy and senses that there may be wider issues going on underneath.
Helen’s Bridal Shower. Friends come to celebrate the bride-to-be with a beautifully organized event. Helen is inundated with love and attention to detail from those closest to her.
Meanwhile, Dana learns more about the off-brand bicycle situation from Noreen. She is affected by the news, particularly given the unresolved nature of the fire investigation.
Cal and Maddie later discuss the challenges that are piling up around them and agree to take things one day at a time. Dana offers to assist with dinner, and Cal continues to explore potential sites for the proposed baseball stadium. Again, Clark lends a helping hand to further improve his standing in the community.
Then a surprise complication arrives: Victor shows up out of nowhere to take Jessica home. Jessica pleads to stay in Serenity and Erik jumps in. Victor agrees to work with Erik to deal with family issues together instead of avoiding them once the emotions subside.
Kyle has a breakthrough after therapy and opens up to Lily about how he feels. With her support he starts to let go of some of the fears that have been holding him back.
The biggest turn in the episode is when Dana and Ronnie finally get the official fire department report. Investigators determine the fire was accidental. This is supposed to be good news, but Ronnie worries about whether the insurance will cover the damages.
A few moments later he finally tells the truth about the generic bicycles and his role in what happened. Dana is shocked and furious that he would keep such an important secret from her for so long.
Margarita night continues to be a difficult time for Dana as she confides in her friends about the stress in her marriage. The other Magnolias are comforting and reassuring, letting her know she’s still an integral part of their future business plans, no matter what.# Review
There are a few emotional moments in this episode but some of the story lines are more frustrating than compelling. Ronnie and Dana’s relationship had come a long way in recent seasons so this newest bump in the road felt like a step back for both characters.
Another interesting, but a little confusing, development is Clark’s growing presence in Serenity. His kindness to Dana is raising questions about where the writers might be headed, especially considering the troubles in her marriage.
The same conflicts and redundant side plots also stall the focus on Helen and Erik’s wedding. Victor’s sudden arrival feels like a manufactured obstacle, not a natural progression of the narrative.
Annie’s love life remains equally perplexing. Now, after finally moving on from her relationship with Ty, she is in the middle of another complicated love story. Instead of spending more time on more romantic drama, the series would do better to spend more time exploring the friendships between the younger characters.
One of the biggest lost opportunities is the interaction (or lack of) between Annie’s friends, after the fire. Characters like CeCe and Lily could have played a much bigger part in supporting Annie during such a tough time, beefing up the emotional core that’s always been one of Sweet Magnolias’ greatest strengths.
Overall, Episode 7 gives us big character development and a big reveal for Dana and Ronnie, but some of the dramatic shifts feel manufactured. With just a handful of episodes remaining, the season will need to strike a delicate balance with multiple storylines in order to give a satisfying payoff.
