The Agency episode 9 is one of the most intense hours of the season, pushing nearly every main character to their breaking point. With the betrayal out, arrests made and Martian taking matters into his own hands, the series heads into its finale with huge momentum.
The episode manages to mix espionage, emotional fallout and internal CIA politics, setting the stage for what could be a devastating finale.
Danny Comes to Terms with the Spy Business
The IRGC arrests Danny, believing her to be a Chinese agent, and she is caught in Iran. Hassan tries to convince his superiors of her innocence but without success.
This is where training and reality finally collide for Danny. The implications of undercover work hit home when she discovers that innocent people can be collateral damage.
The interrogation scenes work particularly well because they rely on psychological pressure rather than physical violence. Every answer Danny gives could be a matter of life and death for her own life or the life of Hassan.
It’s Henry’s Fault
Back at CIA HQ, news of Danny’s arrest is met with immediate concern. Naomi attempts to reach Henry hoping he has some answers, but the brewing crisis within the agency is too much for all.
Meanwhile, Tom learns that intelligence related to Danny’s operation has been leaking directly to China. Martian is the prime suspect.
At the same time, Richardson betrays Henry by giving false evidence to Bosko and the CIA director. Bosko, though he has misgivings, is forced to give the order for Henry’s arrest.
The betrayal also compounds the turmoil within the agency, where trust among senior officers is rapidly disappearing.
Fortunately, Naomi manages to recover Henry’s files before the investigators lock down his office, preserving evidence that may ultimately prove the truth.
Viking Mission Becomes More and More Dangerous
Off the mole investigation, the operation against Viking continues to go to hell in a hand basket. The deaths of two JSOC officers only pile on the pressure on the CIA to get rid of the threat.
The new plan is that Nils will go with Nikkel to the Central African Republic, where he will deliver an expensive watch with explosives in it to Viking.
But under pressure Nils starts to crack. His panic jeopardizes the whole mission, so Martian puts him under house-arrest until the departure.
The operation is becoming more unstable, and serious doubts are emerging about the CIA’s ability to successfully carry out the plan.
Missing on Mars
Upon hearing of Henry’s arrest, Martian tells Bosko the Viking operation will continue. But his actions indicate that he has decided to take matters into his own hands.
Going home, he writes a confession. He reaches out to his daughter. He swears he won’t kill himself, but he acts like someone getting ready to go on a suicide mission.
His daughter returns home to find him missing.
Martian goes back to the office, in secret, gets a black passport, weapons and explosives and disappears before anyone can stop him.
Martian disappears before Bosko knows what is happening.
Price to Pay for Richardson
Naomi correctly predicts Martian will go looking for Samia, but he just quietly says goodbye and leaves.
Richardson was his real target.
Martian finds and murders Richardson, believing that Richardson had been disloyal to both the agency and the country. We don’t find out until later that Richardson was working as a Chinese asset.
The revelation presents an interesting paradox in Martian’s character. He calls everyone else a traitor and he himself was a traitor all season.
His quest for redemption is less about justice than about fleeing his own guilt.
Danny’s Impossible Decision
Martian escapes, Danny still enduring interrogation in Iran.
The story arc of the episode demonstrates the emotional toll of espionage. She knows that Hassan might have to be sacrificed to protect the mission.
In the end, Danny chooses the surgery over the man who put his faith in her.
It is a horrible choice, but it illustrates how intelligence work can often involve impossible choices.
Concluding Thoughts
Episode 9 is a fantastic penultimate chapter. All the storylines progress, the tension never lets up, and the repercussions finally catch up to a number of major characters.
The most interesting character in the series is still Martian. He wants to redeem himself but keeps making terrible choices, so he becomes a character we can sympathize with but also want to scream at.
Danny’s story also takes a turn when he faces the brutal emotional toll of being an operative.
Martian is on the run, Henry is under arrest, Danny is stuck in Iran and the Viking mission is still not resolved. The finale has huge expectations to live up to.
Verdict: 4.5/5
The Agency Season 2 Episode 9 offers suspense, strong character work and big twists that set up what could be a powerful season finale. The stakes have never been higher and most every character goes into the final episode with something to lose.
