The Rookie – Season 8 Episode 17 Recap & Review

The Rookie Season 8 Episode 17 opens with Aaron as the victim of an armed carjacking. While driving, he is suddenly held at gunpoint and his attackers take his expensive car and watch, leaving him shaken but fine.
The next morning, Nolan asks Nyla to help him find Miranda before Malcom and Glasser find out she tried to escape with the kids. Nolan, who is injured himself, is intent on staying involved. Bailey is with him as support.
At the station, Lucy, Tim and Juarez tease Aaron a bit about being carjacked before heading out to investigate leads on the suspects.
Meanwhile, Tim asks Lopez quietly to help him pick out an engagement ring for Lucy. He gets her to promise not to tell anyone, but as soon as he’s gone Lopez calls the others in for their opinions. Aaron also comes to the rescue, offering to hook Tim up with his jeweler of choice.
Elsewhere, Miles gives a vital clue as to where Miranda is. She’s been out in the field, laying low at an old high school friend’s house. Nyla and Bailey and Nolan move quickly to bring her in quietly.
Monica is also working in secret at the same time. She meets Malcom and they talk about a plan of escape but he tells her her options are getting more and more dangerous. But Wade and Garza are already keeping a close eye on her. They let her believe she is in control, while secretly working with Elena to erode her leverage. They want to finally bring down Monica and other big-time criminals connected to her case.
In a second subplot, Juarez tries to slyly find out what kind of engagement ring Lucy might want, supposedly for Rodge. But her phone accidentally sends the convo to Rodge and he freaks out at the thought of a surprise proposal. Nolan and Bailey tell him not to jump to conclusions, to talk directly to Juarez.
Eventually Nolan and Nyla persuade Miranda to stop running. They bring her to court just as the custody hearing is about to start. Malcom and Glasser are disappointed, they had hoped to use her disappearance against her. Nolan: Don’t throw out unsupported accusations, Malcom.
Back in court, the judge surprisingly asks Nolan for his opinion before deciding. Despite Malcom’s protests, Nolan shares Glasser’s belief in dangerousness, and tells of a previous confrontation. After hearing all the testimony the judge grants Miranda full custody and issues Glasser a restraining order.
Glasser then makes a chilling comment after the ruling, saying that without any custody restrictions, he is free to act without limits, and Nolan will be responsible for what happens next.
Still in the Monica story, Wade and Garza are still checking her moves. Monica gives Cooper Johnson some info, and makes some more demands. Wade and Garza stall her without any real evidence, promising to look into financial crimes related to Cooper.
At the station Nolan checks in with Juarez about her relationship with Rodge. Be honest with each other, he says. But Juarez accidentally lets it slip that Tim is the one planning a proposal. This leads to confusion and panic when the information spreads.
Tim runs to Lopez, annoyed at how complicated things are getting. Lopez has a lot of fun with him because he overthinks everything. Later, they meet with Pierre, who, after hearing Tim’s emotional story of his relationship with Lucy, agrees to help Tim find a better ring. Before they go, Tim and Lopez also ask Pierre to help with Aaron’s case.
Juarez and Rodge finally have a frank talk at home, but it turns into gossip about Aaron’s love of expensive things. Unfortunately, the phone routes the conversation back to Aaron.
Later, Monica meets Aiden in secret and asks for more time to deal with Cooper. He gives her a strict deadline of 24 hours, threatening to expose her if she fails. Wade and Garza overhear and find out that Monica is out of control as they suspected.
The next morning Monica gets more desperate and meets Malcom again. Meanwhile, Elena finds a way to take away Monica’s leverage. Garza takes the opportunity to issue an arrest warrant.
Monica tries to play the Malcom’s burner phone to her advantage, misdirecting Cooper and calling Aiden, pretending the police are working for her. But Lucy and Juarez are already closing in. Malcom helps her escape and a car chase ensues. She switches cars at a spa and manages to elude capture for a short time, but not for long.
For Aaron, Pierre’s lead turns out to be right. The team storms the location and discovers that Pierre’s trusted associate is actually the gang leader. Aaron then has a face-off with Juarez over some past comments.
That night Monica tries to escape in a private plane arranged by Cooper. She says an emotional goodbye to Lopez before leaving. She tells him she is sorry for what she did and asks him if he ever loved her before she was a criminal. He confirms that he did. Her life is tragically cut short by a taxi driver as she leaves, who is implied to be a hit ordered either by Cooper or Aiden.
Her story ends when the team finds her body the next morning.
That night, Tim meets Pierre again, who gives him a discount as a thank-you for helping to take down his corrupt associate. Finally Tim picks a ring that speaks to the history of his relationship with Lucy.
At the same time, Aaron reconciles with Juarez by giving her a new phone, easing their earlier conflict.
Episode Summary
Episode 17 brings a big emotional change, especially with Monica’s storyline finally wrapping up. Her story arc ends in tragedy, and while her actions did a lot of damage, her final moments with Lopez reveal a lingering regret that makes her more than just a villain.
There is a lot of momentum in the episode building toward the long awaited engagement between Tim and Lucy. They’ve been taking it slow with their relationship, but this episode definitely sends a strong message that a proposal is on the horizon. This is a huge moment for long-time viewers, who have watched the complicated journey they’ve been through.
All in all, this episode does a good job of balancing action, emotional closure, and character development to set up big changes to come in the season.
