The fifth episode begins by looking at Soon-rok’s work in “low-power mode,” especially at a team dinner. His minimal reactions and reserved personality lead others to perceive him as distant or cold. But beneath the surface calm, things begin to change when Kim Ju-ho deliberately pulls Yumi away from him. That teeny tiny moment makes Soon-rok have an emotional response, and it begins a series of internal conflict.
Jealousy Sets the Cells on Fire
Ju-ho keeps provoking him and Soon-rok’s Emotion Cell begins to set his mind on fire. This results in an out-of-character move for him, lying to Ju-ho that he and Yumi are already watching a movie together. His Reason Cell attempts to regain control, but the emotional wave sweeps him up to text Yumi and invite her to the movie anyway, something totally out of character for him.
A Meeting Misunderstood
Ju-ho’s unexpected visit at the theater, just as Yumi arrives, gets things awkward fast. Yumi and Soon-rok are both uncomfortable, and it becomes even more awkward when Yumi asks Ju-ho directly if he likes her. He admits it, and she firmly rejects him. Yumi, believing Soon-rok was involved in this, yells at him and then leaves.
Rain, Regret and a Change of Pace
Yumi and Soon-rok are caught in the rain, and Yumi takes shelter while Soon-rok goes to find an umbrella. Yumi apologizes and Soon-rok responds in an unexpectedly gentle manner, calling her “cool”. This interaction softens the tension. He has his own strict personal rules, but he is willing to bend them for her, even finding the last available umbrella.
His Own Rules Broken
Soon-rok’s internal struggle is heightened when his Reason Cell reminds him that he’s breaking his own rules, that he only watches movies with people he likes and judges writers based on their work alone. But his behavior changes when he is around Yumi, even sharing an umbrella and protecting her from traffic in a scene straight out of a romantic drama.
Small Things, Deeper Relationships
As they take a walk, Yumi learns that Soon-rok’s phone wallpaper is a Maltese dog named Kongsoon, and sees a softer side of him. His otherwise rigid personality is made more complex by his admission that he loves his dog, even if he has previously criticized the breed.
The drama gets heated behind the scenes
Later Ju-ho confronts Soon-rok about the lie. But Soon-rok would rather not talk than be honest. The next day the consequences are clear: Ju-ho pulls Soon-rok off his team. Yumi, fed up with Ju-ho’s antics, intervenes and has Soon-rok transferred to her team instead, showing her growing concern for him.
A Visit That Changes Everything Soon-rok gets sick and Yumi drops by the clinic. This spark ignites another emotional spark inside him, which is quickly suppressed by his Reason Cell. In his mind, a symbolic “Love X-ray” reveals that Yumi likes him. Soon-rok, however, has a strict rule of not dating co-workers, which complicates matters.
Drawing a Line
Soon-rok soon recovers and avoids him by accepting a blind date arranged by PD Jang. He even calls Yumi to help get it up and running, clearly wanting to keep things professional. The choice reflects an inner struggle between emotion and reason.
A Hidden Truth Discovered
In a twist, the Love Cell finds out that the X-ray revealed not only Yumi’s feelings, but Soon-rok’s as well. He has feelings for her as well but refuses to admit it. The episode ends quietly but meaningfully with Yumi texting him about a possible blind date and Soon-rok heading to her room, leaving some emotions unresolved.
Show Review
Episode 5 moves the story forward in interesting and emotionally complex ways. The emphasis on Soon-rok’s inner world adds a layer to his character that makes his actions both relatable and fun. The dynamic of his increasing emotional turmoil against the backdrop of his rigid personal rules is compelling.
The cell activity, which cleverly visualises the characters’ inner struggles, remains a highlight. The “spark” motif is a good metaphor for the feelings that are coming up, slowly moving from irritation to something more. The Love X-ray concept, however, feels a bit inconsistent with the more down-to-earth symbolism employed in the series.
Ju-ho’s confrontation with Yumi is especially gratifying, giving a great moment of lucidity and autonomy. The subplot of Soon-rok being taken off the team adds tension and moves the narrative forward.
Little touches like Soon-rok’s Maltese dog being revealed help to humanize him and bolster the emotional connection between the leads. The episode manages to maintain a good balance of comedy, romance and character development, and leaves you wondering what Soon-rok will do with feelings he can no longer hide.
