In episode 3 of Doctor on the Edge, Ji Ui has an emotional turning point when he starts to earn the respect of the islanders. And simultaneously, the episode sows the seeds of a major mystery about Ha-ri that could change the story going forward radically.## Villagers Attack Ji Ui
The episode starts with the village chief confronting Ji Ui at the ferry terminal. The chief , still angry at him over his recent diagnosis , publicly accuses him of dishonesty and even dumps trash on him . This is a dispute over insurance. His boss finds out he was diagnosed with angina, not a myocardial infarction, so his expensive medical bills won’t be reimbursed.
Ji Ui is firm on his diagnosis, adding that if the chief had been misdiagnosed, his condition could have easily turned into a fatal heart attack. But logic does little to mollify the chief’s anger.
Back on the island, Ji Ui soon finds out that the word has gotten out. The villagers are not cooperating and many openly criticize his decisions. Even routine consultations become difficult as residents challenge his prescriptions and recommendations.# Difficulty Adapting to Island Life
The mounting tension starts to get to Ji Ui. He takes a more passive approach, rather than fighting every battle. He begins to supply villagers with the longer supplies of drugs they ask for, even if he thinks that’s not the right thing to do.
Ha-ri noticed the difference right away. She can see Ji Ui begin to emotionally distance himself, and just try to get through his mandatory service with no more trouble. Their relationship is tense as she fears he is abandoning the people he came to help.
The episode strikes a nice balance of heavier stuff with lighter stuff. One of the funnier scenes in the episode is when Ji Ui accidentally texts Ha-ri a selfie while talking to her about a package delivery.## Chiyeon and Ha-ri Get Closer
Ji Ui has a hard time settling into the neighborhood. Ha-ri spends her time working with Chiyeon on Madeokdo Island. Their visit takes a turn when a local woman brings in a dog she believes is connected to her dead son.
Chiyeon isn’t interested in treating animals at first, but helps when he sees how important the situation is to the woman. But it’s not quite a smooth attempt, as the dog eventually bites him.
Later, Ha-ri and Chiyeon team up again to save the animal when it is hurt. The experience brings them closer and gives viewers a glimpse of a softer side of Chiyeon.
The pair miss the last boat back and are stranded there overnight. As the evening goes on, Chiyeon reminisces about his first encounter with Ha-ri, elaborating on their shared history and the growing connection they share.# Ji Ui Learns the Truth About Jang-su
Jang-su’s story is one of the best storylines of the episode. Frustrated with his worsening cough, he pushes Ji Ui for better medication. But a chance conversation reveals a key piece of medical history for Jang-su.
Ji Ui hears that Jang-su had a heart attack and had a stent. The drug he is asking for could cause serious complications.
Ji Ui realizes the danger and runs across the island to stop him before he gets the drugs. The tense sequence ends with Jang-su thanking Ji Ui for possibly saving his life.
Someone who once doubted Ji Ui now acknowledges his dedication.# The Villagers Begin to Finally Accept Him
The events surrounding Jang-su result in a marked shift in public opinion. Ji Ui is gradually gaining the respect of the residents for his medical knowledge and many patients express gratitude for his guidance.
Even the headman of the village changes his opinion. After learning the insurance company might have lied to him about his claim, he arrives at the health center and offers fresh seafood as a peace offering.
It’s a little thing, but an important one. The hostility that had characterized Ji Ui’s first days on the island begins to fade at last.Fireflies, apologies, and growing feelings
Later on in the evening, Ha-ri and Ji Ui have one of the most touching moments of the episode.
He speaks about the stress and anxiety that he has been carrying and Ha-ri takes him to see a field lit by fireflies. Away from the health center’s chaos, they have a rare moment of peace.
Ha-ri also apologizes for telling him to tough it out all the time without realizing how much pressure he was under. It’s a big step in their relationship and it shows that mutual trust is finally starting to develop.# A Scandalous Rumor Changes Everything
Just when it looks like the episode is ending on a positive note, a surprise twist happens.
Rumors are starting to buzz in a group chat about a “doctor hunter” from Ansong Hospital. The rumor is that someone is targeting doctors for financial gain.
The most surprising thing is that Jucheon suspects Ha-ri from the get-go.
The charge is completely unexpected and immediately changes the course of the story. When Ji Ui realizes Ha-ri has been quietly taking care of him all along, viewers are left to wonder whether the rumors have any truth to them.## Review of Episode 3
Episode 3 does a good job of moving Doctor on the Edge into more emotionally satisfying territory. Having spent the first two episodes watching Ji Ui take on just about everyone around him, it’s nice to see his persistence finally pay off.
The story of Jang-su is the emotional heart of the episode, and shows why Ji Ui is such a good doctor despite his flaws. As the story progresses, the character relationships between Ji Ui, Ha-ri, and Chiyeon are getting more complicated.
But the biggest twist is the final twist about Ha-ri. The charge sounds too easy to be entirely true. What is more likely is that a deeper and possibly tragic story awaits discovery.
Episode 3 leaves viewers wanting to know what happens next as relationships shift and a new mystery takes center stage.
