Episode 9 of K-drama Filing for Love is one of the most dramatic chapters of the series till now. At last, I-na and Ki-jun’s romance blossoms, only to be eclipsed by jealousy, workplace politics, and a ruinous public scandal. What starts as a sweet turning point for the couple quickly spirals into chaos by the shocking ending of the episode.
I-na and Ki-jun Make Their Relationship Official
The episode begins with I-na being the center of attention, as A-jeong debates whether to send an email revealing her alleged inappropriate relationship with Jae-yeol. But before she can move, another scandal strikes the online world, this time involving Jae-yeol and rumors of family conflict in Haemu.
Meanwhile, Jae-yeol searches frantically for I-na only to discover that she has already checked out of her hotel. But on the beach, I-na encounters Ki-jun again, in a much warmer moment. And she’s still emotional about her feelings, and admits regret over not being honest sooner. “I want to be close to you,” Ki-jun says, even threatening to fight a potential transfer to the United States.
And their relationship starts off properly, giving the episode some genuinely heartwarming moments before the drama starts again.
Jae-yeol Hits Rock Bottom
Jae-yeol begins to emotionally unravel as the romance between I-na and Ki-jun develops. He turns to alcohol and self-destruction after seeing the couple holding hands on the beach.
He misses an important company meeting the next morning and Sung-yeol takes over in his absence. A-jeong tries to reach Jae-yeol many times but he does not pay attention to her.
Things get much more serious later when A-jeong finds Jae-yeol unconscious at a club and rushes him to the hospital. Doctors say heavy drinking almost killed him. The scene illustrates how emotionally unstable he has become since losing I-na.
Workplace Harassment Investigation
The main case of the episode involves Haemu employee Min Tae-woo who has a habit of going scuba diving leading his suspicious wife to think he may be cheating.
I-na and the PM team join the next diving trip to find out what’s going on. The undercover operation ruins the romantic weekend he had planned for the two of them, for Ki-jun.
On the trip, Tae-woo is seen to be uncharacteristically close to another diver, Ms. Ha, and everyone thinks it is an affair. Ki-jun becomes Tae-woo’s diving partner to get a closer look at him and sees Tae-woo filming Ms. Ha all the time.
But the reality is quite different.
Finally Tae-woo panics under water, showing he is not even comfortable with scuba diving. Later, it turns out that Ms. Ha is his cousin, not his mistress. Tae-woo joined the diving club just because his boss Mr.Yoon forced him to join.
The real problem is workplace harassment.
Mr. Yoon has been forcing Tae-woo to join in on almost every weekend diving trips with an offer of promotion. Tae-woo endured the abuse in silence, fearing that if he spoke out he would not be promoted in the future, and not wanting his wife to know how badly he was being treated at work.
This subplot is an important layer to the episode, showing how toxic corporate culture can destroy both personal and professional lives.
Jae-yeol Finally Chooses to End His Marriage
A further major turning point takes place when Jae-yeol’s wife unexpectedly returns home because she is worried about his reckless behavior and family inheritance issues.
Jae-yeol doesn’t bother trying to fix the relationship, he simply asks for a divorce.
His wife is shocked at the sudden decision and immediately becomes suspicious at what could have changed him so radically. While Jae-yeol asserts that the divorce is not due to I-na, it is clear that he has come to the realization of how unhappy and spiritually empty his marriage is.
Unfortunately he realizes it far too late.
Ki-jun and I-na’s Romance Hits a Snag Right Away
One of the sweetest moments of the episode is when I-na invites Ki-jun over for ramyeon. He assumes it’s a romantic date, but it turns out she wants help with a presentation on workplace harassment.
But the two nonetheless grow closer.
Later, when Ki-jun gets jealous finding Jae-yeol inside I-na’s apartment, they finally have a real romantic night together. Ki-jun is hurt and frustrated, but he doesn’t push her to tell him what happened.
I-na won’t let him go. She trails him to the elevators and begs him to stay. The emotional scene results in the couple having an intimate night together, cementing their relationship.
For a brief moment it seems they might actually be able to find some happiness.
A-jeong takes it too far
That happiness is gone almost immediately the next morning.
Jealous and angry, A-jeong posts an anonymous exposé accusing I-na of having an improper relationship with Jae-yeol. The leaked post has pictures of the two of them and goes viral on office whatsapp groups.
Her motivation becomes clear painfully in the earlier confrontation with I-na where she bitterly implied that I-na keeps taking the men she wants. When I-na told her that Jae-yeol would never really choose her, A-jeong snapped emotionally.
The episode ends with I-na learning of the scandal at work. She is completely shaken and nearly falls but Ki-jun catches and supports her.
It’s a strong closing image, one that promises big repercussions in future episodes.
Review of Episode 9
Episode 9 really strikes a good balance of romance, corporate drama and emotional fallout. I-na and Ki-jun’s relationship is finally official, but the writers won’t let the couple have peace for long.
A-jeong’s actions are becoming more reckless, but her evolution into a full-blown antagonist feels believable. Jealously publicly attacking I-na doesn’t seem the way to win Jae-yeol’s love, and may well ruin several careers in the process.
Jae-yeol’s story is also interesting. Even if he regrets it too late, watching his character come to a better understanding of the ramifications of his choices after losing I-na adds more emotional weight to the story.
The workplace harassment case involving Tae-woo also adds meat to the episode, indicating that the drama is interested in bigger themes than just romance.
By the end of the episode, the series has managed to shift gears from romantic tension to full-blown corporate scandal territory. With I-Na now in the spotlight for her misdeeds, and office gossip spreading like wildfire, Episode 10 promises serious fallout for everyone involved.
