The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 Episode 2 revolves around Keyleth as she faces one of the most important challenges in her life. While the rest of Vox Machina face escalating threats throughout Tal’Dorei, Keyleth journeys to the magical city of Vesrah to finally complete her Water Ashari trial.
Keyleth is eager to prove herself, but has a lot of self-doubt. The burden of expectations is heavy on her shoulders, especially when she knows her mother has tried the same trial and never returned. When she arrives in Vesrah, however, she is greeted with a less-than-enthusiastic response from the local leadership, who aren’t too happy with her late arrival.
To complete the trial, Keyleth must journey to the Elemental Plane of Water and recover a powerful lodestone that is sealing a dangerous rift. The challenge is with a strict condition: She must succeed without violence. Brute force is not the answer in a world born of balance and harmony.# A Dangerous Encounter in the Rift
Shortly after entering the Water Plane, Keyleth encounters a huge Kraken guarding the lodestone. Instead of attacking her immediately, the beast tries to emotionally manipulate her, mentioning her mother’s failure and questioning her ability to succeed where others failed.
Kraken is a bargain. It wants freedom from its prison beyond the rift in return for the lodestone. Keyleth refuses the offer, knowing what a threat such a creature would pose to the world. But when the Kraken breaks through the portal anyway, things quickly spiral out of control, endangering Vesrah and the realm around it.
Keyleth’s personal quest is impossible, so she turns her attention to saving innocent lives. The episode’s defining moment is her willingness to sacrifice her own success for others.## Enter Taryon Darrington
Elsewhere in the kingdom, an unwelcome visitor arrives at the royal palace. We are introduced to Taryon Darrington and his mechanical friend Doty, and Taryon’s signature confidence and eccentric personality is present immediately.
But then he is attacked suddenly on arrival. The Beastmaster sends the resurrected Gloomstalker against the palace, and chaos erupts in the defenders’ ranks. Eventually the threat is neutralized, but the creature seems to be tied into that same mysterious energy source that was tied into the powerful Orb introduced earlier in the season.
The attack indicates that a larger and more dangerous conspiracy is beginning to unfold behind the scenes.# Pike and Grog Discover a Disturbing Mystery
Meanwhile, Pike and Grog journey to the Everlight Temple to find out what happened to Priestess Talia.
The temple’s leaders tell us that Talia abandoned her duties when she failed to save her sick daughter, despite many prayers and attempts to intervene with the divine. Her loss of faith ate her up slowly until she disappeared.
Pike uses her divine powers to investigate Talia’s abandoned quarters, hoping to find clues. What she discovers is frightening. The room is smeared with disturbing blood markings, signs of a dark transformation spurred by grief and desperation.
Then deadly acidic fumes fill the chamber and the investigation turns dangerous fast. Pike and Grog make a narrow escape (with Grog once again proving surprisingly useful when the going gets rough).# Keyleth Taps Into Her True Power
Back in Vesrah, the fight against the Kraken reaches its climax. Instead of relying on her own strength alone, Keyleth uses the lessons she has learned on her journey.
She uses her elemental link, growing in confidence, and calls on the power of the Tempest, managing to push the Kraken back through the rift. The creature leaves her with a chilling warning before disappearing, she can’t save everyone.
Keyleth never gets the lodestone back, but the leaders of Vesrah know she has demonstrated the true meaning of the trial. She showed her worth by putting others’ safety before her own ambitions.
The experience helps Keyleth realize that leadership is not about perfection or approval from others. It’s about tough decisions for the greater good. In doing so she takes her place as the Voice of the Tempest.# Percy Patches Things Up With Vex
The tension between Percy and Vex is also given some time in the episode. Having just disagreed, the two begin to repair their relationship and go forward together.
Their reconciliation is interrupted by an invitation from Keyleth to attend her upcoming coronation in Zephrah. The moment is a welcome beacon of hope, but the episode makes it clear that danger is still lurking in the shadows.Episode Summary
Episode 2 offers a solid character driven story that gives Keyleth some of the most meaningful development she’s gotten in the series. She wins not through her strength, but through her compassion, her selflessness and her willingness to put others before herself.
The Kraken is a physical and emotional obstacle, forcing Keyleth to face her insecurities and finally assume her place as a true leader. The episode’s themes of sacrifice and personal growth are handled especially well.
Meanwhile, the season continues to build its larger story. Talia’s tragic fall introduces yet another dark element into the story, and the mysterious energy associated with the Gloomstalker hints at even greater dangers to come.
The arrival of Taryon Darrington also brings much-needed humor and energy to balance the increasingly serious tone of the season.
Overall this is another good chapter that does a good job of developing its characters and planting important seeds for future conflict. This episode focuses on Keyleth’s journey and it’s one of the strongest episodes of the season so far.
