Witch Hat Atelier – Episode 9 After all the drama of last week, Episode 9 of Witch Hat Atelier takes the action down a notch, but it’s still an emotionally rich episode, packed with character growth, magical lore and disquieting mysteries. The episode carefully balances the lighter moments of the classroom with darker revelations concerning Qifrey and the Brimmed Caps, while also bringing Coco, Agott, and Tartah further into the spotlight.
Coco’s Training Leads to More Chaos
The episode opens with Tartah reflecting on the tragedy that his grandfather was involved in. He still doesn’t know what is true, but he feels like Qifrey might be able to tell him what he needs to know.
Meanwhile life at the atelier goes on as Coco works on a wind spell to catch an apple. But as usual, her over-sized sigil causes complete chaos, rather than what she intended. She didn’t pull the apple so much as accidentally pull Qifrey and a whole tree towards her.
Tetia immediately jumps in to explain how Coco can improve the spell, showing yet again how naturally supportive she is. Agott can’t help but criticize Tetia for wasting her time teaching other people instead of focusing on her own studies. The moment turns quickly comedic as Coco and Tetia force Agott to help them anyway, proving that the trio’s dynamic remains one of the strongest elements of the series.
The Witch Exams and the Tower of Tomes
Qifrey later calls the students together to tell them about the five main witch exams. The original witches didn’t create boring academic tests. They turned them into magical adventures with rewards and discoveries.
The girls already know the first trial, which will be held in the Dadah Range, but the other trials are still a mystery. “The final exam is only necessary if you want to have apprentices of your own someday.”
Coco’s biggest reveal is that passing the third exam gives access to the legendary Tower of Tomes. This becomes right away one of Coco’s most important goals, as she still hopes to find a cure for her mother.
The episode also provides more insight into Agott’s ambitions. She says she wants to become a librarian in the Tower of Tomes, a tradition that has existed in her family for generations. It offers one of the clearest insights yet into why Agott drives herself so.
Richeh, however, reacts quite differently to the discussion. She storms off, angry, claiming that she just wants to make spells that she likes. Her hesitation to enter formal magical training points to a deeper emotional baggage that the series will likely delve into later.
Qifrey’s Perilous Investigation
While the students concentrate on their studies, Qifrey investigates the Brimmed Caps for himself in secret. He locks himself inside the atelier’s chimney for the night to safely study the mysterious vial of the rogue witches.
He finds that the object is charged with an old spell, crafted by the Righteous Witches of Healingcraft. These witches devised magical ways to distribute medicine through linked vials with enchanted medals inside.
Qifrey tries to pull the medal for more information, triggering a hidden trap. Water floods the chamber, electricity fills the room, nearly killing him instantly.
Before he can recover, one of the witches from Brimmed Cap suddenly appears, smashes the vial and disappears without a trace. It’s a short sequence but incredibly tense, really highlighting how dangerous and ready the Brimmed Caps are.
Qifrey is back to square one, no closer to finding his way back to what was taken from him.
Coco and Agott Finally Understand
The next day Coco returns Agott’s Sylph Shoes, having successfully learned the correct sigils to repair them. This only serves to further frustrate Agott.
Agott doesn’t understand Coco’s kindness and asks her why she never blamed her for the problems she caused earlier in the series. Coco says she’s upfront about how those experiences ultimately helped her grow as a witch.
But before she can finish, Coco suddenly collapses from exhaustion after days of sleepless nights studying and practicing magic.
Agott’s attitude immediately changes in the moment. And she runs to find Qifrey without a second thought, showing how much she really cares underneath that hard shell.
Truth Draws Nearer Tartah
Qifrey rushes Coco to Kalhn for treatment but her fever gets worse on the way. Luckily, Tartah shows up again and leads them through a shortcut to get to the hospital faster.
Later, Qifrey thanks the boy for his keen observation skills. Tartah is nervous but resolved to finally ask the question that has been haunting him ever since his grandfather’s incident.
We don’t hear what he says, because the episode ends, but it leaves us with an uneasy cliffhanger, as if there are major revelations to come.
Talk about Episode
Episode 9 may not have big action scenes, but it does really well in world building and deepening the characters. The series continues to build its magical society in interesting ways, especially with the introduction of the Healingcraft witches and the history behind their lost spells.
The episode also does a great job developing the main cast. Tetia’s bright-eyed optimism is a far cry from Agott’s burning ambition. Richeh’s rejection of unwanted spells adds to the mystery surrounding her.
But Coco is still the emotional core of the story. She’s still determined to save her mother, and that determination influences all of her decisions, even if it means pushing her body to the breaking point.
The best part of the episode though, is perhaps Tartah’s growing involvement in the larger mystery. Every time he shows up, he feels more and more important to the future of the story. His curiosity about Qifrey and the truth behind his grandfather may one day reveal secrets others would kill to keep buried.
Episode 9 quietly lays the groundwork for much bigger things yet to come, with higher emotional stakes, expanding lore, and mounting tension surrounding the Brimmed Caps.
